Megan Thomas grew up in a small town in Utah, where her early passions for music were matched by an initial disinterest in math. However, a turning point in college sparked a love for calculus, inspiring her to help young learners discover the joy of patterns and problem solving, just as she once did. While math remains her favorite subject, she also developed a deep appreciation for science during her post-baccalaureate premedical studies at Columbia University and City College.
A natural musician, Megan inherited her family’s artistic talent on violin, piano, and organ but found her own rhythm in high school by pursuing tuba and trombone. For practical reasons, she transitioned to jazz bass in college, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of Utah. Over the past two decades, has built a career as an active multi-instrumentalist in New York City’s blues, rock, and metal scene. Her journey has included global tours and collaborations with renowned musicians.
In pursuit of connection to community and intellectual challenge, Megan earned a Master’s degree in Math Education from Brooklyn College as a NYC Teaching Fellow. For over 15 years, she worked as a math teacher and program director in Manhattan’s public schools, where she championed innovative educational programs and fostered connections between students, families, and faculty. She found a home working and learning in Harlem, programming for Columbia Secondary School in math and programs.
Megan is now gaining clinical experience in urgent care, excited to translate her program leadership skills into healthcare. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring global neighborhoods on foot, experimenting with new recipes, playing in her band, and indulging her creative hobbies of knitting and sewing.
